Use of global variables in SolidWorks
Global variables can be used in SolidWorks so that dimensions of particular geometries could be set as relationships of these variables. The main advantage of this is that the user is able to change the value of these global variables from one place such that the whole model changes accordingly. This option is very advantageous in iterative optimizations.
For example, if the user sets the radius of a circle as 'r' and produces and extrusion to make a cylinder. Then, he/she is able to change the value of this radius 'r' from the global variables window without having to go the the sketch and edit again.
The following video demonstrates such a model developed by using global variables.
NOTE: Observe how the global variables can be accessed in the same panel and how easily the model can be changed according to the required dimensions
